START A NEW THANKSGIVING DAY TRADITION
The first Thanksgiving was celebrated in the autumn of 1621. But did you know it did not become a national holiday until over 200 years later? That’s right, it was not until 1863 that President Lincoln made Turkey Day a national holiday. President Lincoln also declared the holiday to be celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November. Another Thanksgiving tradition began with President Truman–the pardoning of a turkey. In 1947, President Truman spared the first turkey from being eaten and since, every U.S. President selects a turkey to rescue from the fate of becoming someone’s dinner. Thanksgiving also sparked the invention of the TV dinner. In 1953, Swanson had so much turkey left over that they packaged turkey and other sides into aluminum trays and the TV dinner was born!
